I recently posted a blue butterfly swallowtail photo in black and white. I captured the photo in Dustin’s garden. The butterfly flew as soon as the camera clicked. He was visiting the butterfly bush blooms. The post is here if you missed it: Outstretched Wings
Some of you have asked that I post the color version of this photo. Well here you go. There is not much color as he was flying away from the camera. I can get much more color up close with the macro shots. I will post more photos later that really shows off his color. The blue really shines in the sunlight.

How beautiful your subject is.
Thanks so very much I love the butterflies.
Yes me too, I always associate them with fairies.
Both pictures are great, but I decided to paint in colors
Thank you very much for your visit and comment.
It is a beautiful photo in both colour and black and white but I prefer colour, even if the butterfly is not very colourful.
Thanks, the funny thing is this is a beautiful blue butterfly, but he is camouflaged in this photo.
Alex hit it on the nose. Not the butterfly, but his comment. Since it isnt crisp and a tad out of focus the black and white is my preferred choice. Also, it helps the white of the flower. He is also correct about the higher contrast. You can get by with a little noise in a black and white, whereas colored versions not so much. This is what I meant on the previous post when I said it was the perfect black and white.
Yes I agree Kim. And when they fly off unexpectedly you cannot get it in focus. Thanks for your input, appreciated.
… I have been using PhotoScape recently for most edits, if not the Photos app on my computer.
You should see the ones I try to get in flight. You can’t even tell what it was supposed to be. lol. Which reminds me.. I took a picture of a butterflies wing that was on the ground yesterday. I should pull the pics off of the cam.. I havent been shootingh much lately, but now the weather is cooperating. Finally, I hope you are seeing some relief as well.
Would love to see your September pleasures Kim. No relief yet. This tropical storm has let out temps and humidity up to summer level.
The colour version surprisingly isn’t that bad…
I’m a bit torn between because the coloured version caught my attention first but the B/W feels “sharper” and slightly more contrasting
Thanks, I am working on getter a better focused photo. If the butterflies will cooperate.
Lol, this is very good for a moving target already, but of course you can always get better and feast our eyes 😀
Thanks, I did not expect him to fly. 🙂 I had been sitting for about 10 minutes trying to get a good pose. Oh well, better luck next time.
Any magazine would be honored to have that exact photo.
You are too kind Kim, thanks.
But that’s how it’s that I really did not know, but I wrote to them 1x how they can approve some to the weekends to me, but they can not
I am sorry, that is really not a good thing to not approve on weekends. Keep emailing them to ask for approval. Good luck.
I have to afree with Alex Ledante on this one.
Thanks Gary for your comment.
Even though I like the greyscale version better, the background needs to be lighter to punch up the foreground elements. Amusingly enough, while I like the color version less I do like it as-is
Great advice. I have a tendency to go too dark, especially with greyscale. The color version is lacking color, but it is what it is. Others were asking to see it so here it is.
the warm light values of the background are enough to differentiate it from the foreground; even moreso since it is out of focus. Greyscale is more one dimensional- so try to keep a high contrast between the fore and backgrounds
You could of gotten by with the glow grey scale, I know what program you use. 😉
And what I did wrong was too much vignette on the greyscale. Didn’t know it would be under a microscope, but I do appreciate the feedback. 🙂
Carol is all “I didn’t expect a Spanish Inquisition…”
Thanks Alex, you are right.
IMHO the piece is fine as-is but if you get Kim’s app and it can separate the foreground and background well, and then you bleach out the bkg a little then the work will be that much stronger
Dear Carol, can you please tell me how fast you approved your post so fast?
Sure, my posts don’t need approval. When you get to a certain rank, and I forget what rank that is, your posts go through without approval.
