Bled Island ~ Church of Our Lady of God

The most recognizable symbol of the island is the Church of Our Lady of God on the lake with a long and colorful history, but there are several interesting island buildings behind the lush greenery. Before the church was erected on the island, the shrine of the pagan goddess of life and fertility, the Lives, was here.  In 1465 the church underwent a transformation and was upgraded to a one-nave Gothic style. A great feature of the church at that time was the 52-foot-tall free-standing bell tower made of hole stone. The church was given its present baroque appearance in the mid-17th century, and a chapel of the Mother of God was erected on the island to encourage people to pray.
