Berlin Wall was built in 1961. It separated the Berlin sector controlled by Allied armies from East Germany and became the symbol of the Cold War. The wall was demolished after liberalization began in 1989. The wall was 3.6 meters high and 1.2 meters wide, 155 kilometers long, of which 43.1 kilometers went through Berlin. The metal grove was 3-4 meters high, and it separated Berlin with a solid wall to the West and the East.
The West was occupied by the British, French, Americans. It was a federal republic. Eastern Germany was called democratic. The wall separated 192 streets (97 between both parts of the city and 95 between West Berlin and the Democratic Republic of Germany), 32 railways, 8 high-speed trains, and 4 subway roads, 3 freeways, most rivers, and lakes. The waters that were at the separation zone were guarded by fast boats with guards.
All people on the West could do what they wanted because there was freedom. Going to the wall, they took paint, brushes, and sketches. They painted up various graffiti. The first was launched by French artists Thierry Noir and Christophe Bouchet who lived near the Kreuzberg district. They painted very quickly because they feared that the border guards could arrest them. So they have drawn the wall on different and specific peculiar themes. Soon the German youth began to mimic the French. They turned the wall into a true piece of art.
