The Aladzha Monastery is an amazing and impressive place. It is a medieval Orthodox Christian cave monastery complex in northeastern Bulgaria, near Varna.
The monastery is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. It was established around 12 – 13 century, but remains of a 5th-century cave monastery have been found nearby.
The monastery caves were hewn into a 25-m high vertical karst cliff near the upper edge of the Franga plateau on several levels. It’s difficult to imagine how monks lived there.
Today, it’s not an active monastery, but it’s a popular tourist destination.

A unique and great monastery! I was curious about the interior. Nice picture, Ellie
I’m curious how it looked in the past, too. Now it’s just empty caves like the second photo. 🙂
Ohh I see… Yesterday, the second picture did not open when I visited this post, now I see it clearly.
I see, there have been many problems with the site lately.
Very cool shot, and thank you for the information 🙂 Great post!!
