Will AR/VR technology drive us further indoors?

I know that sometimes I wander far afield from my various jails. It is a part of the reality of my life sometimes. Not, an issue of my attention span rather more of an I have lots of interests.  I have been having an interesting conversation on Virily about the impact of AR/VR> In part because there is a reality of the pending impact right now. Reality one is that AR/VR devices may drive more people indoors. I know my twins don’t like walking outside. They do it because they promised (part of the what are you going to do if we add another dog to the family) they would walk Raven when she arrived. Our previous lab was well, never really exercised and struggled with weight her whole life.

Dr. Sheldon Cooper of the Big Bang Theory loosely said if outdoors is so great why has humanity spent 10,000 years perfecting indoors. The answer to that is interesting. Not that AR/VR is going to drive everyone indoors. Rather that there are other changes coming that will impact the indoor/outdoor conversation. I spend between 1 and 2 hours working out every day. I don’t run anymore, I walk, and that takes longer. I walk outdoors regardless of weather. Our neighbors make fun of us (we are called the walkers). In the future state of automation that is coming, humans are going to have more time. There was a time when you had to work 50 hours or more per week. Then 40 became full time.

Some countries have cut to 35 hours.

The reality of automation is the increase in time we will have. What happens for us and to us, as we suddenly have more time. Will humanity move further indoors or possibly (and hopefully) is the future of outdoors beginning? Where we have more time to work out, more time to wander and more time to just be outdoors. I know, as someone that grew up with a father who loved the outdoors, that there is an allure to indoors. I know there were many weekends when I was living at home, that I desired nothing more than indoor time. But it is a part of life, one that all of us have to consider. The AR/VR shift won’t impact outdoors as much, I now believe. What I think impacts humanity being outdoors is the reality of increased time form Automation!

  1. I love Nature and there are so many places I would love to go see. I agree that Nature is a huge part of Humanity and I think that it is very important. People should get out and see Nature when they can even if it is walking a trail or two.

  2. I hope being able to enjoy nature and the outdoors never goes away but we will just have to wait and see i suppose. And hope for the best.
