Increasing Your Vocabulary: Quixotic

Quixotic is a rather interesting word. Part of what is interesting is that there are quite a few people in the world today who are quixotic.

The word, pronounced ‘kwik-sot-ik’, means unrealistic, unpractical, impulsive, not sensible, or idealistic. Many politicians are quixotic. Many other people are, too. People who are in love are often quixotic.

The word actually comes from the book, Don Quixote, a Spanish novel written by Miguel de Cervantes in 1605 and 1615 (there are two volumes). The book’s title character is a romantic nobleman who is prone to unrealistic, impulsive behavior. In other words, his actions and schemes are quixotic.

Given the fact that there are so many people who are quixotical, this is a good word to understand and to put into your vocabulary. Part of the fun of learning new words is to also learn how those words came about. In this case, it is also helpful to know, in case someone tells you that you are being quixotic.

    • It is understandable that you might mispronounce the word. After all, Quixote isn’t pronounced ‘kwik-oh-tey’. If quixotic was pronounced like the title of the book it came from, it would sound an awful lot like the word ‘chaotic’.
