It looks like a big size basket but it’s a common boat in Hampi River in Karnataka State of India. More over India is not the only place but people use such boats in other parts of the world too.
As I saw a post in reference to such boat from Scotland called Coracle but the boats used in India are comparatively bigger in size and used for more than one purpose. Yes, people when not using basket boats for sailing they use them for sitting on the ground. These boats can adjust 8-10 persons in water.

I was watching a survival type show earlier this year, and the guy made one. It worked well.
