Who can tell me what is this in the photo? My only hint is that it is edible, and I bought it in a shop in Waterford, an hour south of here. It was the first time I’d ever seen it, and I’ve really been enjoying it. No more info! Tell me what you reckon it is, and I’ll respond in a couple of days 🙂
I did not know it. I had never seen it. Very interesting.
And a very interesting taste too!
Yep, here’s the truth. This is Long pepper or pippali (Piper longum). Related to the more familiar black pepper, but with a much more complex flavour, a little suggestive of allspice. It grows in India. I found it in a great little shop called Spice World in Waterford.
Long pepper is mentioned in the ancient Indian Ayurvedas, and was known in Greece as long as 2500 years ago. It was once relatively commonly used in Europe, but in recent centuries has been completely replaced by ‘regular’ pepper.
I have ground it up and used it in several recipes, including my home-made hummus which I eat every morning. If you ever see it, grab some!
I am always learning new things from your posts. Thanks for the new information and knowledge.
Thanks for your kind encouragement 🙂
Oh no!! I have these creepers and I get a lot of pepper each year. Cannot think of anyone eating these and that too dried as you have said Pepper is hot, very hot.
You could set up an export business!!😂
Ah there we go. Home made hummus. I bet that’s yummy. So regular pepper replaced it. Interesting. So, how different is it?
It would be cheating if I said something.. I’ve seen this picture before. Loved it, and had no idea about it until you enlightened us.
“Related to the more familiar black pepper, but with a much more complex flavour, a little suggestive of allspice.” ring a bell. 😉
You have to tell us what you made with it, besides saving some.
My son guessed martian droppings.
LOL 100% for imagination! You are right of course. Here’s the solution: https://virily.com/food-drink/who-can-guess-what-this-is-2/#comment-1052449

Some of the guesses are fun. I am completely in the dark. I am there a lot.
I think we all are, most of the time, Ghostie! I’ll shine a light here tomorrow 🙂
And here is the correct answer!

I can’t guess what it is, sorry. ????❓❓❓
I’ll tell you tomorrow, André 🙂
Hello Norman, How are you and your loved ones holding out my friend?
It’s a strange situation. We are out in the bush, and I go into town once a week in mask and gloves, like an alien, for supplies. Other than that, life is not so different for us from normal 🙂 What about your situation?
Our situation pretty similar, masks and gloves but what I find disturbing, is that folks in the resort city of Cape Town it’s been business, as usual, today, (+- 1 week into the quarantine) in spite of the official lockdown announced nationwide. A reporter living there received a tip-off that folks generally disregarded our President’s official announcement of kind of martial law with army assisting police patrols and shot some disturbing footage of crowded beaches, restaurants, and packed parking garages. It’s like the twilight zone.
And here is the correct answer, André!

Great, can’t wait to hear it Norman.
I’m interested in this post. It looks like macho. It’s called “Oregon Grapes.” I hope this is it.
No, Lacho, it is not mahonia (Oregon Grapes) 🙂
And here is the correct answer!

Could it be turmeric rhizomes?
Not turmeric, and not a root. It is technically a dried fruit.
And here is the correct answer, Grace!

Your image is confusing Norman(lol). I have a post on Black Pepper
https://virily.com/virily_poll/black-pepper/
It is related but it is not the same plant, Grace.
Did not know about this plant till now.
They look like dried walnut buds.
I am not familiar with those (we don’t grow walnuts here), but in appearance it reminds me a bit of hazel catkins.
Yes! It could be male hazel catkins or birch catkins. As I know they can be boiled and use as survival food.?
But it is not those things – the plant grows in India!
And here is the correct answer, Ileana!

Thank you! I saw, the answer on your facebook page!
Absolutely no idea Norman. I can only imagine. First think I thought was a type of dead twig.
It is technically a dried fruit!
Leave it to you to find weird foods. 🙂 Enjoy!
And here is the correct answer, at last, Carol!

Thanks for the link. Hope things are well.
Never seen nor tasted them. Waiting for your answer.
Here’s a hint, Grace: It is used in the Ayurveda.
That has confused me more(lol) I see stalks – probably something to do with chilis?
Not chillies, which hail from America; this is a native Indian plant!
