Sign Painter at Work (2009-10-20 15-54-53a)
I love work. I can watch it for hours. This man was working at Exposition Carpets, 5718 N Boadway, Chicago, Illinois (Edgewater). He was painting directly on the side of the building, something which is not done very often any more. If it’s not painted over and the building is not demolished, this will some day be a ghost sign.
The photo was taken using a Panasonic DMC-FZ50 camera and edited using ACDSee Ultimate 2018. I rotated the image slightly and adjusted the lighting. Then I boosted the contrast.

One of the great jobs in this world.
Image of someone who is working like this is alive and cool!
I find that they make very interesting photos.
Yes. I agree with tou, Gary…
Thank you. I appreciate it.
You are funny. I love work. I could watch it for hours. 🙂 Amazing talent goes into this type of painting.
I’m on a Facebook group for people interested in signs. I’m fascinated by them.
That’s a lovely photo, Gary. It’s come out really well and the colours are really vivid. Great work.
Thank you very much, CoffeeQueen
I love the yellow. And so the colored buildings look beautiful.
It really stands out against the black background.
Excelent Picture, good ligth and tecnique Regards
Thank you very much, Roberto.
I love the yellow! I miss the days of painting on buildings. Such is life.
We have a lot of old painted signs in Chicago but very few new ones.
My grandfather used to own a store (many years ago) in Wisconsin. I remember the fun spent one summer watching them paint the side of the building with an add. The good old days.
Recently in Chicago several buildings have been torn down and old signs, a hundred years old and older in some cases, have been uncovered.
More important than the camera or mobile phone that you are taking photo with is the knowledge ana the sense to make a good photo! Nice post, unusual street job though.
It’s pretty much a lost art.
It’s nice what you did. Can I ask you to do a professional job with photography?
I’m sorry to make my photos normal mobile. Even a very cheap class of classes.
I’m not sure what you are asking.
Gary
My English is not good. I use a google translator.
I wrote to you that your photo was good.
But that I use a regular phone for painting so my pictures are not as good as yours.
I hope we understand better now.
Aah, I get it now, Robin. Smartphones are getting better and better at taking photos. Even though I always have my camera with me – it’s small enough to fit in a fanny pack – I sometimes use my phone instead.
It’s always interesting to watch as signs are painted.
Very true. Unfortunately I was on my way to work when I took this photo so I didn’t have much time to indulge myself.
