Love ItLove It

Everything Everything by Nicola Yoon

Imagine you are a young girl, confined to your house all your life. How do you view the world? Can you escape? How do you feel when you find out the truth? Is Maddy sick? Written like a journal in the first person, I got the impression that I was Maddy.

She finally escapes and I cheer for her.

On the other hand, as a parent I felt sad that she decided to go away from her devoted mother. The mother gave her whole life to her daughter, took care of her and protected her from the world.

In the end the mother had to let go. She was forced to let go.

If you hold too tight the birds fly the nest never to return.

If you loosen the strings then maybe the baby birds will come back, at least to visit.

I hope that Maddy can find it within herself to keep in contact with her mother.

Read the book before you see the movie!

  1. Interesting you say, “Read the book before you see the movie!” Just about every time I’ve gone to any movie after reading the book, I’ve been disappointed in the movie. Obviously any film adaptation of a book will have to shed a lot of the detail in the book. OTOH, when I see a movie first and enjoy it, and then go on to read the book it was based on, I almost always enjoy it all the more. But hey, I guess there’s always exceptions 🙂

    • I think that reading the book is a much more powerful experience than seeing the movie. I can see the characters in my head in much more detail than a movie can do. But sometimes the music of a movie can add a lot.
