Almost everyone recognizes the name John Ronald Reuel Tolkien.  Mention him in polite conversation and people will likely say:  He’s the guy who wrote the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.  Thanks to him we know about a place called Middle Earth, a wise wizard named Gandalf, people called hobbits and … “the Precious”.

His books brought him fame, fortune, and success but also caused him to retreat from public view. He was a very private man and wanted his private life to stay private. His youngest son Christopher is in charge of his estate and his legacy.  He permitted an “official biography” of his father to be released.
