  1. What a wonderful dream you had. In any case, even though you didn’t get to be the first Viking Andersen in space, Of all the thousands of surnames to get to space, an Anderson with an ” O” was one of them, he was a member of the Expedition 15 crew and spent a whopping 152 days onboard the International Space Station. He launched to the station aboard Shuttle Atlantis as Mission Specialist 5 for the STS-117 mission on June 8, 2007, and remained on board as a member of the Expedition 16 crew before returning to earth aboard Discovery on mission STS-120 on November 7, 2007. On return, his official title was Mission Specialist.

  2. I actually received a toy that I wanted when I was around 5. I received a bride doll. My mother took it from me and put it in the cedar chest so that I wouldn’t mess it up. Every year she would take it out and let me look at it. 🙁

    • Linda, don’t hold it too much against your mom, hard times made our parents over conservative and very respectful of the monetary value of stuff. because, the truth, more often than not, was that they probably felt they had hungry mouths to feed instead of buying them lavish toys. You are not asking my advice but here it is anyhow, my wife and I are products of the fifties and did much like our parents. Now our fold has left the nest and we were “stuck” with a cupboard full of useful stuff, doing nothing but take up valuable space. So, 10 years ago, we started using the stuff, whatever will be leftover, when we have gone will not be treated with quite the same “respect” anyhow and will likely end up at a local Hospice fundraiser which is great of course, but at least we will have had the original intended use of it.
      DO THE SAME.

    • Our parents suffered many a night in silence, we only saw the tip of the Iceberg and that was bad enough, imagine how they must have busted their brains trying to keep the family ship afloat on the quiet. Things were often so bad that they ended up doing some weird s**t to keep the unit together. No, Grace, I think the mere fact that we can refer to an actual family is already a huge advantage. My dad was a 13-year-old kid, one of 8 step-siblings when his ma said, “George, I can’t feed you, you have been a good boy and I love you, take this Bible and go and find joy, come back only when you have found it… I never had to go through that. He found joy, in eventually meeting my mom several years later. He survived against all odds, putting himself through junior school and onward through University as an adult, he was a wonderful father to me and my brothers and sister and returned home to his mom to tell her, he’d found Joy.

      • Listen. what are you doing here With your flowery language you should be writing books if you are not already doing it.

I love reading your posts. And this story is so touching. I had tears.

We may not have had money but there was joy in our household. Father would buy nice things to eat and then my mother had to struggle with whatever money was left for her to handle They were the most loving couple.
