Ants have a free licence to go anywhere and they particularly search for food forming endless queues. While care is taken to see that no food is spillt on the ground they are still seen around trying to get inside food containers.
Apart from using a mild insecticide some other precaution needs to be taken where insecticide cannot be sprayed. And that method is to create a moat kind of a situation where the base tray where water is placed is much larger than the stand that is kept on it for food container to be placed. Because of the water ants cannot get to the food containers.
We use this method regularly specially for honey and sugar containers.

Yes, we have problems with ants, thanks to them I can no longer make guava jelly. I put certain things where ants won’t go or else the water trough
There is no other go for protecting specially that which is sweet.

Our rice is placed on a stool with the feet in small plastic cup with water.

I use this method for our sugar and honey on a daily basis.
I have heard that coffee keeps ants away, but I don’t know whether it works.
I remember my mother doing that for cockroaches.

This is a daily feature here and we have to have some system to keep them away from approaching the food specially sugar and honey

I do what you do too.. but outside the kitchen I use borax power with flour and sugar.
For the garden we have a stronger insecticide.

The most hardworking, disciplined insects are a pest to us. Repel them by sprinkling some turmeric.
That will kill them but the method that I have recommended is that they will not approac the food.
Oh, ants can be a real problem sometimes. Just lately I’ve not had this problem, but when I do, I just use ant killer which tends to fix the problem.
We too have a mild insecticide but we cannot use it for kitchen, dining and buffet tops.
