Smoke bush, Cotinus coggygria, is a shrub that’s also commonly known as royal purple smoke bush, smokebush, smoke tree, and purple smoke tree. I write about mine each year. And now the leaves are starting to appear once again.
The birds always build a nest in the bush, sometimes I find two nests. The bush is in the front and I can see it easily from the window. Earlier there was a pair of cardinals in the bush, I hope they build soon.
The bush has such a beautiful color to the leaves. A burgundy color. Sort of like the other plant I wrote about earlier. I like this color in my garden. It seems to go well with many evergreen bushes and plants I have.
This is a low maintenance plant. I cut it back at the end of the summer, and it comes back each spring. I will post more about it as the season progresses.

I know this plant well. Except for dental problems, the sumac is suitable for wounds such as eczema, purulent wounds, acne, boils, swelling. Also recommended for sweating feet, diarrhea, hair loss and more. Herb baths are used for hemorrhoids and profuse white flow.
We had a smoke bush in our garden In the apartment where I lived before. But since the hush grew too huge and needed more space to grow i donated it to the apartment , now it looks like a huge tree.
Oh that is good to hear Dawn. This one gets trimmed a couple of times though the season.
i have seen this in yards and decorative gardens. And if I recall you shared yours maybe a year plus ago?
Yes I try to share mine every year. They are amazing trees. And the leaves are unlike others. Also, the birds usually build nests when it matures.
