Pereskia in bloom

Another one of my cacti is in bloom today, it is a leafy cacti. It is called Pereskia, , they are also called rose cacti and leaf cacti. These cactus look like a normal plant with small thorny spikes on the stems. These grow like shrubs and have pretty looking blooms. There are a few varieties of these plants , I have three of them, one has pink blooms, which appear in bunches , the orange one almost always is a single bloom like the creamy yellow colored one.

The pink and creamy yellow blooms are larger than the pink blooms. I almost threw away the yellow pereskia as the spikes are very long and they hurt me every time I am near them. I just noticed a week ago that I still had one piece of the stem stuck on to my mango sapling. I have rescued this cutting and put in a container to grow.

These plants could make beautiful hedges that can keep critter away from your garden and they also look incredibly beautiful when in bloom. Sadly I am never able to catch these blooms fully open as the open only in mid day when it is so hot. The flowers close around 4-5 pm much before the sun sets.
