Nature Tuesday ~ Corn is a real treat

Sweet milk corn is a real treat that brightens up summer evenings by the fire. Fairly undemanding to raise.

Corn is a thermophilic plant, but it must be watered on the bare ground during drought. It also needs regular hoeing and weeding.

Young corn pods are harvested in August or when the corn hairs turn brown. Maturity is also checked by squeezing a few grains in the pod. If the liquid flowing from the grains is milky in color, the pod is ripe enough to use. The pods are harvested by October, but these are less sweet and more starchy.
