My daily picture – Lonely tree

As I told you in my previous posts,  the frozen rain has covered the roads, trees, cars,  houses and fields of a large part of Romania, with a dangerous layer of ice.Freezing rain is one of the most treacherous conditions for drivers, but it is one of the most exciting phenomena for photographers. Freezing rain occurs when the upper atmosphere is warm enough to produce precipitation in the liquid form but the temperatures at ground level are below freezing. This rain freezes on contact, making an ice layer. This phenomena creates beautiful landscapes.

“For me, trees have always been the most penetrating preachers. I revere them when they live in tribes and families, in forests and groves. And even more I revere them when they stand alone. They are like lonely persons. Not like hermits who have stolen away out of some weakness, but like great, solitary men, like Beethoven and Nietzsche.”Hermann Hesse

  1. Beautiful picture, I do know we get ice on the road at winter in some areas or are even slippery when wet.
I could imagine it may be even dangerous walking unless you can get very good foot wear with a good grip on the tread.
Quite often when it has been really hot and then rain comes its dangerous driving because the tar in the road partly melts and makes the roads slippery.

  2. Stunning picture of a lonely but not forsaken tree as you took its picture. I just love how the branches glimmer with the icy rain. But you are absolutely right, ice rain is one of the worst for motorists, pedestrians and everything actually as I am a witness. In 1998 we had a huge ice storm here and in the Eastern United States which crippled the electricity grid by twisting huge metal electrical tranmistters in a bow tie, by unleashing icy roads all over etc.. I had to miss a couple of days work because of it as the buses were off the roads, We missed electricity in our residence for about two weeks. If I remember well it took about one month for the electricity just in our sector to be fully restored and almost 2 to three months for the whole city electrical grid to be restored. But the outlying area were without electricity for a good 2 to almost 4 months. They had to rely on backup generators. I certainly hope you will not get this type of icestorm in Romania.

    • The same things happened in Bucharest. Freezing rain lasted for 4 days and caused many damage. More than 2,000 trees fell and many cars were damaged. Many homes have gone without electricity.

      • Glad to hear you didn’t have to deal with it. They’re predicting exteme cold in Chicago this week. Our current record low for all time is -33 degrees C and it may get colder than that on Thursday. I’m not looking forward to it.
