Mrs Garfield Hippeastrum

My Mrs Garfield Hippeastrum is now in bloom. Its kind of a little late in the year , but anytime is welcome. I love these blooms and enjoy taking pictures of them when they are in bloom. It is one of my most loved plants. It is a hybrid created around the 1880’s in UK, but I guess they are all over the world today.

They have variegated strap like foliage which are pretty when the plant is not in bloom. The bulbs of this variety are much smaller than the Dutch amaryllis. These do not bloom until they are a year or more older.

Its a habit with these plants that they do not bloom until their roots fill the pots until they are tight and ready to burst. It is good to plant three or four mature bulbs in a pot, they also take time to establish their roots in any planted surface. So be patient with Mrs Garfield.
