Grackle ~ Nature Tuesday

Snapped a photo of a Grackle at my deck feeder just now. They do not visit often but when they do, they take over and do not allow other birds to eat. But the Blue Jays wait patiently until they are gone.

Common Grackles are large, lanky blackbirds with long legs and long tails. The head is flat and the bill is longer than in most blackbirds, with the hint of a downward curve. In flight, the wings appear short in comparison to the tail. Males are slightly larger than females.

You can see the shimmering blue on the upper body in this photo. That tells you it is a grackle. They are in the blackbird family, but sometimes confused with other varieties such as Brwer’s blackbird and Starlings.

    • You are so kind Elenka, this was taken from inside, behind my patio doors! That is how I take all of my bird photos, except the lucky shot I got of the Blue Jay in the tree.

  1. I have never been able to differentiate the smaller birds let alone know their names. I only know the larger ones such as eagle and owl. Learned the name of this bird, won’t forget it?
