Serbia is the main country of the former Yugoslavia, but one of the least familiar. Just look at the map to understand why. When Yugoslavia crashed, all its beauty remained far beyond the borders of Serbia. Serbia no longer had a seafront, the largest lakes went to Macedonians, the highest mountains – Slovenians, the most beautiful cities – to Croats.
You will not see the wonders of the world in Serbia. Medieval fortifications and monasteries, adding some variety to the industrial towns and plains farms, do not equal the masterpieces of architectural neighborhoods.
And yet, there are beautiful wildlife, mountains overgrown with forests, silent monasteries, lonely villages, contrasting cities and warm people.
Here was my sister’s wedding.
