The Åland Maritime Museum – a finest place for sea-dogs and landlubbers

Want to spend a really interesting time? You and your family surely should visit this unique maritime museum.

The Åland Maritime Museum is located in the town of Mariehamn. Finland. It spotlights very important moments of the unique history of Åland Islands as the holder the world’s largest fleet of wooden sailing ships.

The Museum is laid out on two floors. Its exposition contains various items of ship snap part of the ship’s engine, various exhibits brought from sails, etc.

There are interactive games and special activities for the children. They can climb inside the reproduced hold, visit a part of the ship’s cabin, even navigate the ship through ice humps or coral reefs using a computer. Also they have an opportunity to go on a treasure hunt and meet with the cute sailor – brave Ruby the ship’s rat who has its own mini-exhibition.

The ticket to the Museum gives you entry to the museum ship Pommern. This splendid four-masted sailing barque was built in 1903. The negociant Gustaf Erikson used it to carry grain from Australia to Europe. After World War II, Pommern was donated to Mariehamn as a museum ship. Now you can find Pommern near the Åland Maritime Museum.

The Museum is open all year round (and museum ship Pommern is open on certain hours because of the preparation  for the new visitor experience in 2019, more details – https://sjofartsmuseum.ax/en/the-ship-pommern/).

P.S. You’re welcome to current exhibition: “Faith, Hope and Love – sailor tattoos” (till 28 February 2019).
