Mount Athos, Greece

Mount Athos is the most important holy place in Greece. It is an independent Monastic State. The mountains are home to 20 Orthodox Christian monasteries. We visited the area in the summer. Tourists are not allowed to get off the boat to actually visit the monasteries. You need special permission from the Monastic State’s authority to enter and only males are allowed to set foot on the island.

Here is a photo of one of the monasteries, this is a Russian one. We sailed by it slowly so we could get a good look.

This is a zoomed in photo I took of another one of the monasteries. The architecture of each one varies a bit.

As we approached the monsteries

Here is a photo taken from the boat as we headed towards our first glimpses of Mount Athos.
