Mount Athos is the most important holy place in Greece. It is an independent Monastic State. The mountains are home to 20 Orthodox Christian monasteries. We visited the area in the summer. Tourists are not allowed to get off the boat to actually visit the monasteries. You need special permission from the Monastic State’s authority to enter and only males are allowed to set foot on the island.
