Maglich Fortress .. Serbian Kamelot.

Fort Maglic, a kind of Serbian Kamelot, is safely tucked into the warm embrace of central Serbia. The moment you enter the valley of the Ibar River, all the worries and all the stress of city life are behind you. Everything that follows is endless and fairy-looking landscapes that shift one after the other.

Some valley of the Ibra is called the Valley of Kings, the second Valley of Ages, and they are also called the Valley of Lilacs. She received the first two titles because she was the heart of medieval Serbia and kept the monasteries Studenica, Zicha, Sopocana and Djurdjevi Stupovi. She got her third name because of a love story.

Magličje is a magnificent medieval fortress from the 13th century, located at the very top of the hill.Since ancient times, people have transmitted the legend of the Cursed Jerina, the wife of the despot of Đurđa Branković. It was said that the town of Maglic was built by Jerina, and that the people hated and called this not so commendable name. Today, the fortress is called the city of Jerenin.

One of the theories is that the lilac was planted by the King of Serbia, Uros I, in order to show his love for the Catholic Queen Jelena Anzujska, and that this French nobleman would feel at home.

He wanted his third wife to be happy. Since she was a minor daughter of the Byzantine emperor Andronicus, Simonida, Milutin did not want her to be unhappy and adorn the entire valley of the Lilacs.

Maglic is erected on a steep cliff at 150 meters above the river level, on an extremely inaccessible terrain where it is surrounded by river on three sides, only for pedestrians, is accessible from the west side. Climbing to Maglic is always a real adventure. These are awaiting you narrow curved paths, steep cliffs, hanging bridge..

Seen from below, it looks almost unattainable, like a stone royal crown on the top of a large wall. The city is of an irregular shape, adapted to the ground on which it was built. It has seven towers, about ten meters tall and a central one, a tower that is two times higher than the others and located at the highest point of the fort. The “Donjon” tower was the characteristic of all medieval towns and had the function of the observation post. The total area of the interior is about 2000 square meters.
