Illinois upsets #5 Michigan

source

The Illinois Fighting Illini upset the #5 Michigan Wolverines 71-62 in a Big Ten Conference game at Champaign, IL.  For the first time this season, the Illini used their only advantage of post play with center Kofi Cockburn and power foward Giorgi Bezhanishvili to secure the victory.  The interior duo dominated the boards as they combined for 31 points and 18 rebounds, while Michigan only had 28 rebounds during the game.

Hopefully, the rest of the team will realize that they need to continue to feed these big men for the rest of the season instead of all of the bricks that Illinois shoots in each and every game.  On Wednesday night, the Fighting Illini were fighting to actually make a 3-point basket because they went one for eleven beyond the arc.

Also, Cockburn, who is 7’0″ and 290 pounds, accidentally clocks the referee at about the four minute mark on the video.  The referee was able to finish the game.

    • Yes, it looks like Ohio State is the only dominant team in the conference, but it’s possible that the Big Ten could send about 8 or 9 teams to the NCAA Tournament. I’m thinking Ohio State, Michigan, Maryland, Michigan State, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Purdue, and Penn State will make it in if they continue to play like they have so far.

Indiana should be fine after beating UConn this week. Purdue just beat Virginia, but their only problem is Coach Matt Painter’s substitution patterns. Penn State just upset Maryland, but they are still shaky. The shaky ones for me are Penn State, Illinois, and surprisingly Michigan State.
