Boke’s Button Cactus (Epithelantha bokei) (2014-06-26 14-04-03b)

The photo was taken at the Chicago Botanic Garden, Glencoe, Illinois.I used a Nikon Coolpix P7700 camera to take the photo. Then I used Luminar 2018 to apply the Microstructure filter, reduced the brightness and boosted the clarity, contrast, shadows and sharpened a bit. I also used the erase tool to remove a little glare.

  1. Ah look there this is again. I really still want one, now that I know it has babies too. Love this photograph Gary, this one really shows it’s colors! I will get one sometime in 2018!

  2. Gary, I’m going to cautiously assert that that photo is not Epithelantha bokei. In fact, it’s not even a cactus. If you do a Google image search for Epithelantha bokei, you’ll see a very different plant. This is, I believe, a Lithops (commonly known as a ‘living stone’), which is in the ice plant family (Aizoaceae). You can see my Lithops in this recent post https://virily.com/science-nature/a-winter-visit-to-the-greenhouse/ – it’s the second photo. Perhaps somebody had mixed up the labels at the Botanic Garden?

    • I’ll have to look into this further. I’m usually skeptical about using Google for IDing something because there is so much bad info there but none of the images for this species look anything like what I photographed. Thanks for pointing it out. I wish the CBG had more photos of its collection online. They have an app but it barely makes a dent in their collection.
