At the moment, the only chance I get to see the mischievous New Zealand Kea, is at the Auckland Zoo. As these live only in the South Island of New Zealand
They are very cheeky birds and get into a lot of trouble which is why some farmers have shot the birds, because they kill their sheep and destroy metal on motor vehicles..plus take food from Trampers back packs.
However, they are just curious native birds that are now an endangered species. I hope to go to the South Island one day..
Wow, those eyes are so intense. He sure looks clever for sure. I hope he survives!
Thanks Tasartcraft glad you like the bird.
just how big are those birds? kill a sheep and strip metal?
They have very strong beaks and talons. They sit on the back of a sheep and peck it and drink the blood as they are sitting on the sheep..
They are about a foot high or a bit more.
Very interesting and beautiful bird. Sometimes we find incredible excuses for killing birds.
Some people just get into a rage and take it out on an animal or bird… It is a beautiful bird.
Interesting bird!
Years ago, in Bulgaria, they had the same attitude about crows – they ate part of the crop … An inappropriate pretext to shoot at them!
Yes, probably some are angry and take it out on a creature that cant fight back..None can fight against a loaded gun.
Thanks so much Georgi…for your comment
This bird is really something special, dear Pamela … I hope you save it from extinction
We have people who have been really hard to save it from extinction in New Zealand
Still hoping for the best, dear Pamela
Interesting bird surely. Human beings will not tolerate anyone disturbing their peace which is awful in a way
Thanks Grace, it is an interesting bird…
