Trondel 1 of 78

I abruptly stop, thinking I could leap over the desk from here. Then I spot the shimmer. The telltale light of the shield in front of her desk between us.

Shit!

“I came to retrieve Es. Why are you holding her?”

The image on the other side flickers ever so slightly. Damn it’s not even Violoi there. She says, “you are a naughty man Eren. I want insurance you won’t overstep our boundaries. So, I had my surgeon modify Esmelda slightly to ensure that if you don’t behave … she won’t return home next time.”

I hear the telltale muffled voice, with the mic of my synth-suit, coming from my left. Without looking over, I estimate she’s ten feet away. Quickly thermal-scanning with the side vid scan-cam in my shoulder button, I note the shimmering image seated at a small metal desk behind an illu-wall. Switching cams with a mental flick, I can see the whole room as I reply, “we were intending to be good. We promised you … Trump.”

A cough, then she replies, “yes … you know too much already. Asking for the Red Rundle was sign you know a whole lot … then asking about the Trump signalled you know way too much. I need insurance you’ll be good. I know who your friends are and that if you inexplicably disappear they’ll look for you … so, I can’t just dispose of you – can I!”

Seeing with laser-scanners, I note that the whole room is illusions of light phantasms, even the desk shield tell is a light illu. The room is only twenty-five by twenty. I map out the room in my mind, using my cams and I spot her control panel.

“You know who I am?” I ask.

She responds slow. “Yes!”

“So, this is why we’re here?” I place my hands on my hips as if in confident frustration, finger releasing my tempered-glass throwing dagger into my palm.

“You know why we’re here … you get to leave alive. You determine in what condition you and Esmelda leave, depending on your answer to my request.” The image at the oak desk continues to talk with me.

In a sudden up sweeping swing, my arm rises and flicks out releasing the dagger towards Violoi’s throat, the one real sitting behind the illu-wall, in one quick, smooth action.

It’s a clear, clean hit, cutting through her artery severing it completely.

What I wasn’t ready for was the following alarm, as she died. It’s a set of loud tri-klaxons blaring at over 300 DB on my metre. Also, the lights in the room go out, leaving the room in complete darkness.

I switch my vision to the cams set in night vision. Several seconds later, now nearly deaf. I walk over to the corpse where I pull free my dagger and look over the bank of controls.

I see the three panels, and I observe the labels. The left is labelled, ‘Rose’ the right is labelled, ‘Fawn.’

I look at the central panel, spotting the alarm control, and I release its arming switch, turning off the alarms.

Then the lights come back on nearly blinding me just as the door opens and now in a  deafened state I barely hear an audible, ‘click.’
