Sigmund Freud is known as the father of psychoanalysis. Here are 10 facts about him.
1) Sigmund Freud was Austrian, although he was born in Moravia (now known as part of the Czech Republic).
2) His most famous work is “The Interpretation of Dreams” (1900).
3) He developed the notion of the Id, Ego and Superego as well as many other theories about the human unconscious.
4) Freud married Martha Bernays and they had 6 children together.
5) Freud was born to Jewish parents but he was not a practicing Jew and declared himself an atheist.
6) One of Freud’s most theories is that of the Oedipus Complex, in which he suggests boys are jealous of their father because they have an attraction towards their mothers.
7) He was a controversial professor at the University of Vienna.
8) The Nazis burned many of Freud’s books during the occupation of Austria.
9) Freud consumed cocaine which he believed to be therapeutic and even experimented with it for a while.
10) Freud died of cancer in 1939 in the UK.
His look is strange. He has something in mind mysterious.
So he was on heavy drugs when he came up with all those theories? Now I am not sure what to believe.
Freud was creepy. One of my psychology professors said that he set back the study of psychiatry by 50 years. I said are you sure it wasn’t 100. It seems remarkable to me that anyone at all gave him any credibility.
Some of his work on dreams is quite fascinating to me. There is some stuff that makes sense but of course it is now considered pseudo-scientific. I wouldn’t really call him a psychiatrist in the medical sense.
Jung is more interesting to me.
Great post! I do not know most of this fact!
Thank you for reading Albert!
You are very much welcome, TZ
Did not know most of these, very interesting. Did not know he died of cancer or experimented with cocaine.
He experimented with all kinds of substances and I’m surprised he lived a long life.
Those are some very interesting facts about him. I don’t know much about Sigmund Freud. No, I didn’t know he died of cancer either.
I didn’t know that either actually, I always assumed he died of old age.
I didn’t know that Freud died of cancer. Thanks for posting this biography.
No problem, I was surprised to learn that about him too!
