Sigmund Freud is known as the father of psychoanalysis. Here are 10 facts about him.

1) Sigmund Freud was Austrian, although he was born in Moravia (now known as part of the Czech Republic).

2) His most famous work is “The Interpretation of Dreams” (1900).

3) He developed the notion of the Id, Ego and Superego as well as many other theories about the human unconscious.

4) Freud married Martha Bernays and they had 6 children together.

5) Freud was born to Jewish parents but he was not a practicing Jew and declared himself an atheist.

6) One of Freud’s most theories is that of the Oedipus Complex, in which he suggests boys are jealous of their father because they have an attraction towards their mothers.

7) He was a controversial professor at the University of Vienna.

8) The Nazis burned many of Freud’s books during the occupation of Austria.

9) Freud consumed cocaine which he believed to be therapeutic and even experimented with it for a while.

10) Freud died of cancer in 1939 in the UK.

  1. Freud was creepy. One of my psychology professors said that he set back the study of psychiatry by 50 years. I said are you sure it wasn’t 100. It seems remarkable to me that anyone at all gave him any credibility.
