While there is a huge influence from Hayao Miyazaki’s Laputa, I feel that this piece contains a completely original flavor which still retains the strong taste of the manga which inspired it. Indeed, an earlier iteration of this work had the girl offering a flower to the golem instead but simply for reasons of composition, it just worked better with her caressing the stone which is the golem’s fingertip
Once again, there is a girl looking up against a luscious skyline (which I will work into any piece given the slightest opportunity) so that’s always a good thing. I’ve also managed to evoke a strong environmentalist vibe without being preachy at all so I am quite proud of that
#1 promo piece
No, that isn't a typo or a spelling error: I've deliberately used that spelling as an homage to Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun which has been a huge inspiration to me over the years. Indeed, these two characters would fit right into the series...
#2 release version
Still manages to look painterly despite any evidence of brushstrokes or paint splatter. While the tones appear to be rich at first glance, if you look again they're actually quite washed out...
I’ll have to check out the book. This is beautiful.
You should definitely give it a read, but don’t expect to find these two in there…
