“LAB-AS!” Literally means fresh. This is the word the fish vendors would cry as they walk along the streets almost every dawn to make their presence known. To the people inside their homes, when they hear the word “lab-as” it means fresh fish.
This is what it used to be in my youth. Mostly women, these vendors would walk the streets before the break of dawn. Carrying with them fish, freshly caught – perhaps by their fisherman husbands, to sell to the households along their way. Crying “LAB-AAAAAAAS!”
These days, I no longer hear the usual cry in the morning. Though I still see some fish vendors plying the streets but it’s no longer at dawn; and often times they are now riding a bicycle or a motorcycle and they no longer cry out “LAB-AS!”
