An Old Two-Family House at 5733 North Ridge, Chicago, Illinois (2015-04-01 13-21-58a)
The building was built in 1900. Note that there are two front doors. This is a two-family house but a lot of people had a problem with sharing a door with another family. The attitude sprung from having lived in single-family homes. To deal with this attitude, architects put in two separate front doors. This didn’t last long, however. There are many homes built within a few years in which people shared front doors.
The photo was taken with a Nikon Coolpix P7700 camera. I used ACDSee Ultimate 2018 to adjust the perspective and crop, adjust the lighting and increase the contrast and clarity.

Interesting post … the house is very beautiful
Thanks. I’m glad you liked it.
Reminds me of a duplex perhaps. Two completely separate living areas.
Nice shadows around the house.
Chicago has a lot of two-flats where the first floor and second floor are two different apartments. This one seems to be different. It’s two apartments but split down the middle.
I really like that house but if I had the money, I would buy both of them and get rid of the neighbors and live all by my lonesome in such a grand mansion. Plenty of room to wander about, get exercises cleaning all these areas, going up and down the stairs and a lot of cats and maybe two dogs to keep me company. Sorry if I seem to rant and rave but I wish I was living alone sometimes.
It would take a lot of work to turn this into a single-family house. There is a mansion in my neighborhood that’s for sale. Right across the street from Lake Michigan. Not sure what they’re asking.
I think families are adult and themselves will understand what each want…
Now, yes. At the time the concept of sharing a building with someone was new to a lot of people and took some getting used to.
Sharing a door? Oh my this is problem
It doesn’t bother me at all, either. The USA was pretty different when this house was built. A lot of people had a problem with more than one family living in a building.
Ohh our system is not used to this unless we live in a Condo or an apartment. But nevertheless we don’t share a front door. just gate or lobby.
Very nice Gary, two doors means you only have to answer one, but because they are together when someone knocked on one, both were answered I would bet!
The building I live in Visitors have to ring a doorbell on the outside that corresponds to who you want to visit. Only the person they ring hears it.
I forgot to add…
The building I live in was built in 1906, only 6 years after this one was built.
It is funny to me sometimes, I was born in Chicago but lived in Southern Indiana for most of my childhood. When I was 11 and 12 I lived in Thailand. I went from 110 years old was an old building, to 3000 years old was an old building. Changes your perspective.
Chicago is such an amazing city, thanks for sharing this Gary!
Nice and amazing post wonderfull…/
Thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
you’re most welcome 🙂
It looks nice to live in this house.
I shared this on a Chicago-oriented group on Facebook and someone told me that a friend of theirs had lived in the house for a while and he was in it quite often. He said it was really nice.
He is lucky to experience it. Would you like to try and visit the place in the future?
It would be nice but, at my age, I have trouble with stairs.
I hope you will have the chance. c”,)
It looks like a cozy place! I like the house!
The only problem I see with it is that the street it is on is a busy one and very noisy.
