Beautiful Blue Jay

Moved the deck feeder closer to the patio doors. Filled the feeder with whole peanuts. And now the blue jays are visiting often. As long as there are peanuts.

They are such beautiful birds. A striking blue color. Taking photos inside, behind the patio doors, and between the close blinds. I will gradually get in the open to get photos, once they are use to the movement.

Blue Jays make a large variety of calls that carry long distances. Most calls produced while the jay is perched within a tree. Usually flies across open areas silently, especially during migration. Stuffs food items in throat pouch to cache elsewhere; when eating, holds a seed or nut in feet and pecks it open.

  1. You managed to get a great photo there.

That used to happen with our cuckoos. Earlier it was the zoom that got them in my camera but slowly they tolerated me coming closer. It takes time.

  2. That is a lovely bluejay. You were lucky to get such a capture. I once got one of a tiny little bird standing on the road in Latvia and as I walked away he was still there deep in thought,

Beautiful Blue Jay

I love birds of all species. The Blue Jay usually only visits during the winter. I put out a deck feeder with peanuts for the cardinals each winter. And this also attracts the beautiful Blue Jay. Their color is stunning. They are a large crested songbird with a broad, rounded tail. Blue Jays are smaller than crows and larger than robins. And they are most often detected by their noisy calls. I remember seeing one chase my cat years ago. They are aggressive birds.

I took these few photos this morning from inside my patio doors. I hope to get outside and get more later. They are skittish so it will be a process to get them used to me and my tripod. I have a tree full of both male and female blue jays right now. Such an exciting time at my deck bird feeder! More of those little things in life I always talk about.

I was inside taking these photos just now. Will try to get out and take more later when they get used to the camera.

So cool to see this beautiful bird at my deck feeder. He was checking out the peanuts in the tray. He would get one in his mouth then fly away to a tree to eat it, then come back and do it again.

  1. I adore these photos…I love watching birds and how I wish they are all sociable. In Sydney, I happily fed the birds in the wharf not knowing that there was a sign prohibiting people to do so. Hahaha!

  2. I wonder if there is a meaning behind seeing blue jays. It has been said that if a red Cardnials is in your yard, it means you have a visitor from heaven. That could make someone missing their lost loved ones feel comforted.
