The Uptown Broadway Building is a historic three-story building located in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago. It was built in 1926, using a Spanish Baroque design, by Walter W. Ahlschlager. The building, built at the height of the terra cotta industry, is known for its ornate terra-cotta facade with depictions of ancient gods, rams’ heads, shields, helmets, birds, fruits and trophies. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
The building’s original purpose was to provide office space for doctors and dentists. There is an unconfirmed local legend saying that Al Capone operated a speakeasy in the building’s basement. However, the building is only one block south of the Green Mill, a well-known speakeasy run by Capone.
