How important is our posture? Short term effects of bad posture include stiff neck and back, and headaches. Long term effects are spinal curvature and even painful digestion. All of these issues create more serious problems that can quickly become chronic.
Why we need to attend to our posture becomes obvious when we look at the concerns, but is it possible to make needed corrections. If that’s so, then how can we do it? Thankfully, the answers are bright with promise! Most of the problems are far easier to correct than we usually realize.
Here are 5 easy tips to get you started on the road to recovering your posture:
• Whether sitting or standing, regularly check to make sure your ears are over your shoulders. Reposition shoulders to keep chest lifted and align ears over them to guard your upper spine.
• Prevent unstacking your spine by not crossing your ankles or legs when sitting. What’s that you ask? It amounts to proper load bearing in your body. The spine needs to remain neatly stacked.
• Do a bit of research to learn which posture exercises will work best for your circumstances (health, life/work styles, and more). Shoulder shrugs are one of the easiest that most of us can do.
• Sitting for long periods not only deteriorates posture but has other side effects. Studies say that it reduces life expectancy! But more to our point, it’s important to get up and move around regularly to maintain proper blood flow to the spinal column.
• This last one’s a no brainer, but often neglected. Good nutrition and hydration are needed for all of the body’s intricate systems to work correctly. Amazingly designed, the spine’s system is no exception to this rule.
None of this information should take the place of your doctor’s advice. This is just established common sense help for posture. You can check out these sites for more info on working to restore your posture:
