How do I start a conversation?

+-The last in the series, I promise. Ellie asked me in a comment how to grow Social Media and ended the comment with an ask, how do you start conversations on a writing site? First of all, the concept of communication can be difficult. What do we mean by a conversation? If we take the premise (and you don’t have to, it is more a starting point here) that the goal of an interview is to share ideas, then you can move forward with that. The concept is called Civil Discourse. It isn’t new, and the Greeks (Socrates and Plato) coined a term for this. It is logos. The god of communication was Iris. Logos is the concept of expressing an idea. The conversation occurs when the other person finds a point of interest in your information.

Now conversations can be difficult. I know that sometimes we don’t know how to start the actual discussion. How do we create that initial connection? Talks do not always begin with Pithy titles, but a pithy title can spark conversations. What we are seeking is a connection. Connections are interesting. One of the things that I have used Facebook for is to reconnect with people I haven’t seen in a long time. But also to connect with people I can’t see in person as much because they live 12,000 miles away from me. We, often on Facebook, have conversations about things that are going on. The other site I often find that has amazing conversations is my lot.

How we carry that into the new world order? Now that conversations are everything, but there are limits to those conversations. Well, the easy button is replied. But that doesn’t help anyone, does it? It isn’t about replying; it is about connecting. The first thing is to understand the limits the other person operates under. We all have limits. So, for some people, it is ok to wax poetic. For others, it is ok to be funny when you respond. For others, it is more about a severe response. You have to know what the person you are trying to converse with accepts. So I will end with some of the things I do, help yourself if you want, or think they are something of value to you!

  1. Acknowledge the current post, and if possible, carry something from a previous job or conversation into the new discussion! That builds connections quickly!
  2. Pick something in their post that you found intriguing and ask the author questions about that!
  3. Remember the topics that are best avoided (politics and religion)

I hope this series has helped! Now go out and converse!
