Well, Monsanto is doing research on increasing crop yields by genetically modifying the microbes that are in the soil. They are looking at what type of bacteria and fungi that promote the growth of crops in various types of environments.
Once those microbes are identified, they are then placed into the soil. However, genetically modifying the soil could potentially contaminate the entire earth.

The end will be around the corner – they keep delaying it. The first trial scheduled against Monsanto this year was delayed for the second time.
