  1. 7/8… Made me think… Present intelligence in NZ is that NZ is the first country to see the sun, which is a different thing from being the first to enter a new Year.

    New Year happens at the Dec/Jan junction, which is SUMMER in the southern hemisphere, and so NZ receives the sun first.
    Countries in the northern hemisphere are in winter at New Year, so it is dark until late in the morning. Taught me something, as usual.

    • But I’m pretty sure Kiribati is closer to the equator than NZ though I’m not sure whether it’s north or south of it (I suspect south). Can’t check on this little phone I’m afraid 🙂
