Which Would You Prefer – Rice or Potatoes

Two of the most grown crops in the world are rice and potatoes. Rice is a grain and potatoes are vegetables since they are tubers.

In a side by side comparison, a cup of white rice and one potato have about the same amount of calories, protein, and starch. They are also comparable in glycemic load index. However, while rice has many vitamins and minerals, potatoes have a wider number of vitamins and more minerals. White rice is higher in iron, but a potato is five times higher in calcium, has twice as much phosphorus, and a whopping 14 times more potassium.

It isn’t possible to grow potatoes in all areas, nor is it possible to grow rice everywhere. The expense of each is largely governed by this. In potato country, rice tends to be expensive. In places that have a lot of rice growing, potatoes are usually expensive.

If price wasn’t an issue and both were easily available, which would you be most apt to eat?

    • Even now with just my wife, adult daughter, and me, we could go through 20 pounds of potatoes a month without too much difficulty. I do love rice as an alternative and change of pace, though.

    • I’m not sure if you knew this, but did you know that potatoes are great for people who are trying to lose weight? The problem is that a person needs to avoid most of the high-calorie toppings that most people love to heap onto potatoes; gravy, sour cream, ranch dressing, butter…
