Two of the most grown crops in the world are rice and potatoes. Rice is a grain and potatoes are vegetables since they are tubers.
In a side by side comparison, a cup of white rice and one potato have about the same amount of calories, protein, and starch. They are also comparable in glycemic load index. However, while rice has many vitamins and minerals, potatoes have a wider number of vitamins and more minerals. White rice is higher in iron, but a potato is five times higher in calcium, has twice as much phosphorus, and a whopping 14 times more potassium.
It isn’t possible to grow potatoes in all areas, nor is it possible to grow rice everywhere. The expense of each is largely governed by this. In potato country, rice tends to be expensive. In places that have a lot of rice growing, potatoes are usually expensive.
If price wasn’t an issue and both were easily available, which would you be most apt to eat?

I like brown wild rice, and of course potatoes! I like food period, not much out there I don’t like.
Well, there is that, too. I also like most foods. I think the exceptions could be counted on one hand. In some of those cases, too, it isn’t that I don’t like the food, but rather that it isn’t a favorite and I wouldn’t go out of my way to eat it.
When I was a child, I used to love potatoes in any possible form, but now I prefer rice. I try to have a diverse diet though.
Even now with just my wife, adult daughter, and me, we could go through 20 pounds of potatoes a month without too much difficulty. I do love rice as an alternative and change of pace, though.
I chose potatoes over white rice, but I would choose brown rice over potatoes. Love potatoes, love brown rice more 🙂
Well, they are both certainly good for you!
Both but potatoes are better.
That is how I feel about it. :))
Not a fan at all of rice….but I love potatoes. I am from the potato state.
Too bad I have to give them up in January when I go back to low carb eating.
I’m not sure if you knew this, but did you know that potatoes are great for people who are trying to lose weight? The problem is that a person needs to avoid most of the high-calorie toppings that most people love to heap onto potatoes; gravy, sour cream, ranch dressing, butter…
I love both, rice and potatoes, bu if I had to choose it would be rice.
I’m the same way, I love them both, except that I’m a meat and potatoes sort of person. :))
I am a rice person so I would pick rice.. 🙂
How often do you eat rice in an average week?
I like rice better than potatoes unless they are French fries.
We eat potatoes with almost every meal and probably go through about 20 pounds per month. Rice is so expensive here that we only get 1-2 pounds of uncooked rice per month.
I can see why you kike potatoes over rice.
I voted for potatoes due to their versatility – nothing beats a roast potato! On the other hand, I much prefer rice to spud pudding!
LOL…yeah, spud pudding doesn’t sound appealing. Then again, mashed rice and gravy don’t sound too great, either.
