Taupiri is a place of a sacred mountain for high standing Maori people and the mountain is opposite this reflection of the Waikato River. The sacred mountain is a graveyard for royal Maori people and it is Tapu. Tapu is something you don’t touch and you don’t mess with it, and usually there is a very good reason for it.
The higher up this mountain the grave is, the more important the buried Maori person is, but they are all important and none are forgotten by their people.
Although I am not a Maori, a Maori woman told me, that it is very important to wash your hands after visiting the grave of a loved one. I also observed it was important to wash your hands before and after the grave of a loved one in the Jewish tradition too. My family don’t do that but I decided that the hand washing is a very good idea, both before and after, if no water, use hand sanitiser..
Taupiri has stunning views and is on route from the Waikato river…
