The teeniest, tiniest, daintiest flowers – Spring Dreams

This is the flowers of the Barbados cherry or Malpighia Emarginata . This is a small tree or shrub growing up to 20 feet in height. My plant here is a small cutting I got from the rubbish heap into which someone  in my neighborhood decided to throw their pruned branches

Just looking at these dainty tiny flowers makes me feel so happy. The flowers are hidden deep inside the branches. I think I did miss the first few blooms, it is only when I noticed the tiny pink petals on the ground I looked up to see the first blooms on my now two feet high shrub.

The fruits of this shrub are very rich in Vitamin c , but they are also said to contain vitamin A, B1, B2 and B3. These berries are also rich in bioflavanoids and carotenoids and are rich in antioxidants. They are tart and sweet with a hard pit in the middle. The make great pies juices and toppings for desserts.

I am not sure if I will get any fruits this summer as the plant is just 8 months old, but I am sure that I can look forward to a whole lot of berries the next season.

But I also think this plant will make an amazing bonsai with its deep red berries and tiny leaves. I will make sure to marcott (air layer) this plant to get a ready made bonsai.
