Tap Water versus Bottled Water

The constant threat of illness and death makes all of us want to avoid risks. We take care of what we eat and drink. Death can result by drinking contaminated water. That is why some people often ask the question: “Which is safer – tap water or bottled water?”

Tap water is water running from a tap. Other words for it are running water, city water and municipal water. It has several uses which include drinking, washing, cooking and flushing of toilets. Bottled water on the other hand is water stored in a bottle. Some of it comes from natural sources although it has been treated, purified and sold to consumers usually at a price thousand-fold its cost price.

Some governmental authorities have been pushing tap water use to people because it is generally considered to be better for the environment than bottled water. On the other hand, status conscious individuals would rather go for bottled water. It has been found that the differences are often a matter of perception.

  1. Our tap water stinks! We use filters and my husband buys bottled water. Never did a scientific analysis but I’m sure our bottled water is safer or has fewer contaminants than the water from the tap.

    • I have used tap water since I was a child. We have never had any health issue with it. I think your area is polluted and the underground water has been affected.

  2. Interesting poll. My tap water comes by gravity from a hill further up the valley, and I am confident of its quality. Of course tap water quality varies from place to place, depending on how well the piping infrastructure (and that of neighbouring sewerage systems) is maintained.
I spent many months travelling in West Africa some years ago, and was warned to always sterilise tap water before drinking (bottled water was not widely available). However the airline I flew on, lost my bag, so I had no choice but to drink the tap water straight. And guess what? I was fine 😀
