General Bernardo O’Higgins Riquelme, base campAntarctica Only a handful of people remain in it during the frigid winter months when average temperatures dip to about -8 °C. Summer, on the other hand, is a comparative hive of activity. Roughly four dozen people converge here to conduct on-site research or launch field expeditions further out onto the icy expanse of the Antarctic Peninsula. Founded in 1948 by the Chilean Antarctic Expedition and run by the Chilean Army, the base is named after one of Chile’s founding fathers. Bernardo O’Higgins helped the country gain independence from Spain in the early 19th century.
This would be spectacular to witness.
