Smoke bush, Cotinus coggygria, is a shrub that’s also commonly known as royal purple smoke bush, smokebush, smoke tree, and purple smoke tree. I write about mine each year. And now the leaves are starting to appear once again.
The birds always build a nest in the bush, sometimes I find two nests. The bush is in the front and I can see it easily from the window. Earlier there was a pari of cardinals in the bush, I hope they build. I have never seen a cardinal nest in my yard.
The bush has such a beautiful color to the leaves. A burgundy color. Sort of like the other plant I wrote about earlier. I like this color in my garden. It seems to go well with many evergreen bushes and plants I have.
This is a low maintenance plant. I cut it back at the end of the summer, and it comes back each spring. I will post more about it as the season progresses.

Nice photo, nice shades of color on the plant. What’s more is that you’re so lucky to have all the birds come live in your yard.
Thank you Bradley, I love this bush. I try to grow plants to attract them.
I’ve seen it, but I did not know his name. Let’s have the cardinals happy to build a nest in your yard. We look forward to seeing developments on this issue.
I hope they do, but sometimes they build and I never find the nest.
I hope you get the Cardinals to nest in your yard! Would love to see pictures of them if they do!!! Fingers crossed Carol!
I am keeping an eye out but they are good at hiding. We will see.
Its funny, when we lived in Indiana we used to have a side tree/fence line that was very protected and the cardinals nested there every year. I never thought about it, Now I miss that.
Oh what a great memory. Love the cardinals. They remind me of my Dad.
My dad loved birds, in particular, any bird that ate insects. He loved apples more!
Lovely shade or red!!
I don’t recall seeing one …
Thanks, I like it as well. I will post more of the bush later.
Very nice shrub, dear.
Thank you so much Branka.
I do not know if it is the same but something similar grows with us … very nice shrub
It might be the same, lovely leaf color.
The really nice leafs have this bush or wood. And the birds love him for many reasons.
Good to see you Robin. Yes the birds can hide in the bush and nest.
