I wonder what is your favourite spice? I am thinking here mostly of sweet spices, but many spices are used in both savoury and sweet dishes. If you don’t see your favourite listed below, please let us know in the comments 🙂
Although most spices are cultivated in tropical or sub-tropical zones, they are in use in every part of the world. Indeed it was the demand for spices in Europe in the Middle Ages which drove the quest for discovery of the New World.

I love turmeric, I wrote an article on Virily about a miraculous turmeric recipe but my favourite spice is Ginger.
Ginger is great, but have you met cardamom?! I use turmeric a lot, both as a fresh root and as powder. Usually in savoury dishes, but also I flavour my kombucha with it.
I think I have never used cardamom. I will give it a try!!!!
Many people like turmeric, but it is but useful.
I am also a fan of turmeric, both the fresh root and the powdered form. I use it mostly in savoury dishes, but also to flavour kombucha.
it depends!
something sweet or something savory?
True! I was thinking of sweet, though several of those listed can be used in both scenarios 🙂
in fact they can – i like garlic for savory, and for sweet lately it has been Cardamon (it adds a unique flavor)!
Cardamom, oh yes that is special. I first encountered it in coffee in Israel and was bewitched by its aroma.
i do the same thing, Cardamon in my coffee! i had it when I was working with a company in Tel Aviv, and I love it.
More than Chicory in fact!
Had to go with cinnamon but i love many others.
That was my choice too, Carol, but I had to consider carefully among many 🙂
I love saffron, the delicate flavor of the spice makes me want to use it in all my cooking but the price gives me the shivers.
Yes, the price of saffron is shocking. I have used it a few times, and adjudged that its favour, though pleasant, cannot justify that outlay!
There are so many I like but mace – it grows in our garden – along with nut meg would be my choice and then there is cinnamon and ofcourse cardamom – I am confused (lol)
I love many of them too, though I have to say mace maybe less than others, for some reason. Cardamom is one of the most amazing spices, but I have a lifelong love of cinnamon, since I remember when I was a child, if I was sick, my mother would give me toast sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon. And it tasted like heaven 😀
I love cinnamon too and I use it in my signature date and walnut cake. You have good reasons to like cinnamon.
Voted for ginger but there are many that I love.
Cinnamon is probably the one I consume the most though.
I eat ginger mostly in savoury food, but cinnamon I often sprinkle in my porridge.
I add cinnamon to my coffee every day, and I also use it for oatmeal and baking recipes.
I love basil. Is that an actual spice?
I would class basil as a herb, since it is a green leaf, but I don’t think there’s any hard and fast rule! I am very fond of basil too 🙂
