Guarding the coast and guiding mariners on dark nights: for generations, the lighthouse has been the most distinctive nautical navigating instruments, it helps steer the course of ships that, approach land, and run the risk of running aground on the rocks.
The tall tower was crowned with a rotating bulb that gives off a beam of light that is visible for many miles. Scanning the horizon in the middle of the night from sailing ships, sailors on watch could see it and alter their course. This is the reason they are located on craggy coastlines with cliffs and other protrusions that could endanger their vessels.

I have been in a few lighthouses, and one is near the place where I was born.
I grew up half a kilometer from one. And was friends with the lighthousekeeper’s son Claus. I spent a lot of time there.
