We have a nutmeg tree and we get nutmegs every year. The nutmeg fruit cracks on the tree itself and then drops down.
The outer cover is discarded and the mace – red in colour – is separated from the nutmeg. Both the nutmeg and the mace is then dried.
Nutmeg and mace are both spices that are used in many dishes. Both have a strong pleasant smell. Birds get attracted to this tree and they come in groups and chirp away.
The peculiarity of a nutmeg tree is that one has to plant two trees to bear fruit.

Well well. I have never seen fresh nutmeg. I have never even thought about where it comes from. Shame on me. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Wow. How awesome to have one.
My garden has several yielding trees and nutmeg is one of them.
Another thing I didn’t know was about the mace. We use it here in tortillas. I guess I really need to read more about spices.
Mace is quite expensive but not as expensive as the other spice – Saffron
I have not seen fresh nutmeg. Is this becoming a big tree? How can I plant nutmeg here in Spain?
