Elvas in National Geographic – Portugal

“A small town south of Portugal, classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage since 2012 by the largest and most unique fortifications and buildings in the world.”, this is how the publication of National Geographic begins the article that highlights the city of Alentejo.

Elvas is the true star of the Alentejo, the city is the largest fortified in Europe and was one of the most important cities for Portugal’s independence. For centuries an indestructible fortress was being built in Elvas to defend it from attacks by other peoples such as the Castilians and at the same time to guarantee the country’s independence.

I haven’t visited this amazing city yet as it isn’t very near but I will plan a trip soon.

  1. Pretty impressive! The design reminds me of the Cittadella of Alessandria which is close to where I live but, to be honest, I never visited. And obviously, not as amazing as this one. Elvas truly looks like a city! ??
