When we just got married we started filling our home with all that was required to live life to the hilt. I believe in style and went about getting whatever was required to fulfil my aspirations.
We went in for glasses of every size and design. Cutlery was next. There were forks and spoons by the dozens. The crockery was of the best quality – dishes and plates, dessert plates, fruit bowls……………. enough to cater to atleast a dozen guests.
We went in for the best available serviettes that matched the decor of our house. They even matched the table cloth that we used for the dining table.
The serving spoons were next on the list. They were all in silver just like the spoons and forks. The cutlery had to be polished at regular intervals.
Each time guests arrived our dinner set would be brought out and it was very satisfying to see my dream getting fulfilled. We had enough domestic help that ensured maintaining this standard.
But alas this scenario did not last . Domestic help became a rare commodity and that coupled with our ageing, meant not being able to keep up to the standards we had set.
Banquet style changed to buffets. Guests now help themselves from food kept in utensils in which they are cooked. We have a buffet table. The cutlery is not laid around but dumped in a bowl and they pick from there. Paper towels have replaced serviettes.
The 7 course meal has now been brought down to four. In other words we do what is practical but with no frills.

I never paid much attention to these things, dear friend … I just went to the shops and bought a cutlery set … simple and functional
We paid a lot of intention to aesthetics around us.
Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to furnish my home that way.
Used to do all of the above.
You can still serve an elegant meal if you so desire. Think outside the box and don’t follow the norm!
It is not the question of following any norms but it is all about the work involved which was quite fine in the good old days when I was much younger and we had more than a maid to take care of that.
I understand. Then you must go simpler.
This reminds me of the elegant glasses that I brought home from the hotel during a grand party when I was younger, LOL.
Those were the days and I only reminisce and get satisfaction doing it
