I was living in the Cape Winelands many years ago and It was customary for our family to walk one of the literally dozens of hiking trails in the many mountains in and around Robertson on Sundays after lunch. One particular weekend we decided to do the McGregor, town trail, about 10 kilometers from Robertson and we were coming back down when a sudden passing shower caught us. We managed to find a small cave to get out of the rain, which soon passed and it was at the mouth of the cave where we found these strange berries growing. I unfortunately never found out the real name for them but one of the indigenous Koi tribes say it’s medicinal and known to them as “Kaapse Rooi Bessie”, Cape Red Berry.

Not good at identifying berries. These are beautiful.
Red berry, you mean red currant or some other berry? To my mind, it looks like red currant.
No Anastasia, red and black Currants are prolific in the Cape Wine-lands where we lived These are berries, I’m not even sure they are edible. They grew several hundred meters up a mountain trail at a town called McGregor about 10 kilometers from where we lived at the cave entrance. We took several photos but no actual cave shots can be found. None of these photos of Currants, resemble the shape of our berries in the photograph. https://bit.ly/2mfU5eY
